by September 24th, 2019

Normality is yet to return to the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region, despite the Jamaica Urban Transit Company resuming operations on some route.

The state run bus company had said it was hoping that full resumption would have been achieved by 5:00 p.m. however up to news time, this was not so.

The drivers withdrew their service in light of the killing of one of their colleagues, last night.

This was reportedly in retaliation to the killing of a taxi operator by a JUTC driver, last evening.

JUTC Corporate Communication Manager, Cecil Thoms says, the bus drivers are still worried about their safety, despite a stakeholders meeting this morning and assurances given by the police.

He noted that, the police will accompany drivers on routes that are deemed dangerous.

In the meantime Transport Minister, Robert Montague, says taxi groupings have committed that their members will offer normal service to transport commuters.

In giving an update to parliament this afternoon, Montague said it’s not clear when the JUTC drivers will resume service.

Montague has expressed appreciation to taxi operators, and private citizens for assisting stranded motorists.

The police have also been assisting in transporting people.
