St. Ann police condemn jungle justice, following killing of alleged cattle thieves in Gibraltar

by July 4th, 2023

The St. Ann police are urging citizens not to engage in jungle justice.

The call follows the mob killing of two men in Gibraltar, in the vicinity of Watt Town, yesterday (July 3).

The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old Demar Rose, a construction worker of Hague, and 46-year-old O’neil Robinson, a taxi operator, of Martha Brae, both in Trelawny.

Reports are that at about 10:30 AM, Rose and Robinson were among a group of men travelling in a grey Voxy minibus and a black Axio motorcar, seen in the community engaging in the larceny of cattle.

They were attacked by a mob. Rose and Robinson, who were travelling in the Voxy, were chopped and wounded. They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The occupants of the Axio escaped.

Head of the St. Ann police, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell said animal carcasses were found in the Voxy.

The estimated cost of the stolen animals is $1 million.

While noting that praedial larceny will not be tolerated, SSP Powell said persons should not take matters into their own hands, as mob killing is still considered murder.
