St Ann police report crime fight successes

The St. Ann police are reporting success in their on-going efforts to reduce crime in the parish.

While delivering the police report to the St. Ann Municipal Corporation monthly meeting yesterday, head of the division, Senior Superintendent Michael Smith, said the police have seen a reduction, especially since February, when new strategies to combat crime were implemented.

SSP Smith expressed confidence, that with more resources and increased corporation from the public, the police will be able to reap more success against criminals, and other law breakers, well into 2019.

He said the number of murders committed in the parish continues to decline, and up to yesterday, there were 32 murders recorded.

This is a drop from the 49 recorded for the corresponding period, last year.

SSP Smith said, at least 50 percent of the cases have been cleared up.

The divisional chief said apart from shootings, which record 3 incidents over last year, all other major crimes saw a reduction.

Shootings so far this year is at 29, three more than the 26 recorded for last year.

Meantime, robberies went down by one case. 49 incidents have been reported so far this year, compared to 50 over a similar period, last year.

On the matter of rape cases, 15 have been recorded to date, which is down by 4, compared to last year’s 19.

And, break-ins moved from 94 last year, to 83 so far this year.
