by December 28th, 2018

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (Statin) has reported growth of 1.8% in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the third quarter of 2018, compared to the similar quarter, last year.

This is the 15th consecutive quarter of economic growth.

Statin’s Deputy Director General Leesha Delatie-Budair explained that the growth resulted from improved performances in both the goods producing and services industries.

Ms Delatie-Budair said among the sectors in the services industry, that recorded improvement are retail trade, hotels and restaurants.

The largest growth of 2.1% in the hotel sector, was due mainly to the 3.8% increase in foreign national arrivals.

For the goods producing industry, positive performances were recorded for mining/ quarrying, and construction.

However, the temporary closure of Petrojam in July, contributed to the fall off recorded in the manufacturing sector.
