Taxi groups call for more time to meet uniform requirement

by March 26th, 2019

Several transport groups are calling for a 30 day extension to allow public transport operators to prepare for the wearing of uniforms.

This as effective April 1, all hackney carriage and contract carriage operators must wear uniforms.

According to a joint release issued by the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TDOSS) the National Association of Transport Operators (NATO) and the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) the operators are unable to meet the deadline.

President of TODSS Egeton Newman says while the move is supported, it will put a financial strain on operators and as such more time is needed.

Head of Nato, Kirk Brown agrees, as he says his members are also unable to make the transition within the time outlined.

The groups say while they have not yet written to the relevant authorities, plans are in place to do so.

And, President of JATOO Louis Barton says he is hoping to have a meeting with Minister of Transport Robert Montague soon.

Some members of the groups have been leading a silent protest since yesterday and are expected to continue through to Saturday Match 30.
