Taylor opts out of Windies Women vs Pakistan series due to security fears

by January 24th, 2019

West Indies Women captain Stafanie Taylor has opted against traveling to Pakistan for the upcoming three-match T20 International series, citing security concerns.

Taylor, however, will join the team only for the subsequent One Day International series in Dubai.

Merissa Aguilleira, who was captain before being replaced by Taylor in September 2015, will lead the team in the T20 series and will have experienced medium-pacer Shakera Selman as her vice-captain.

The squad will also consist of two-first timers in 21-year-old Jamaican opener Rashada Williams and Trinidad and Tobago off-spinner Karishma Ramharack who was named as replacement for Hayley Matthews. The injured all-rounder needs another three to four weeks to recover from the medial knee ligament damage that she had suffered during the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia in December.

The series will take place in Karachi from January 31 to February 3, and will mark the resumption of women’s international cricket in Pakistan since they hosted Bangladesh for two T20Is and two ODIs in September 2015.

They will play the three T20Is at the Southend Club in Karachi, before moving to Dubai for three ODIs that will be part of the 2017-21 ICC Women’s Championship.

The first ODI will be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, while the second and third matches have been assigned to the ICC Academy ground.

The Windies Women will arrive in Dubai for a training and acclimatization camp on January 26, before heading to Karachi four days later for the first match of the T20 series that bowls off on January 31.

This will be the second tour by a West Indies team to Pakistan in the last 10 months after the men’s team travelled to Karachi for three t20i’s in April last year, which the visitors lost 3-0.
