Teachers hiding from their landlords

by November 10th, 2017

The island’s educators are putting up a strong fight in their opposition of the government’s wage offer and continues to get support from members.

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) has begun an island-wide consultation with its members, after it rejected government’s six percent wage offer again last week.

Today’s meetings were held in three parishes: St. Mary, St. Thomas and Trelawny.

Some educators at the meeting in St. Thomas told JTA President, Georgia Waugh Richards, that there should be a lock down, or work to rule in schools across the country, to send government a message.

Majority of approximately three hundred teachers, who attended the meeting at the Morant Villas hotel, supported the suggestion to turn up for work without participating in others activities, that do not include teaching.

One teacher, Yanette Hholness, complained that teachers are unable to pay their rent, and some have to be hiding from their land-lords.

Ms. Holness called on other teachers, to support the call for an increase in the government’s wage offer.
