Top seed Andy Murray, Warinka advance in French Open

Top seed Andy Murray cleared a potentially tricky first round hurdle at the French Open, beating the in-form Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-love. Third seed Stanislas Warinka advanced to the second round with a workman like performance over Slovakian Jozef Kovalik. 

The 2015 champion Warinka eliminated Kovalik 6-2, 7- 6, 6-3 in one hour and 57 minutes.

In other matches Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco stunned ninth seed Alexander Zverev eliminating the in-form German 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a first round match that was suspended overnight after a long debate between both players and the umpire.

Eighteenth-seeded nick Kyrgios also moved on after defeating Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 and will now face South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the next round.

Playing in his first open match in five years, 29th seed Juan Martin del Potro defeated qualifier Guido Pella 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

On the women’s side, British number one Johanna Konta suffered a shock defeat to world number 109 Hsieh Su-wei in the first round. seventh seed Konta dominated the first set but eventually went down 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 to the Taiwanese, while Sarah Erani stopped American Nicole Gibbs 6-3, 6-love.
