Traffic police have been directed to use their discretion as it relates to public passenger vehicles, transporting children without a child seat.

Taxi operators had complained that the child restraint regulation under the new road traffic act is impractical, that getting a child seat is expensive, and that the law would result in loss of revenue.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who is Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, said the matter will be reviewed when the council meets next week.

Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, said the discretion is in keeping with the announcement by government that it will review the child restraint requirement.
