Tree planting initiative aimed at restoring forest cover

by October 4th, 2019

The national tree planting initiative is aimed at restoring Jamaica’s primary forest cover that has dwindled over time.

Speaking at today’s launch ceremony, Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted the importance of trees to the environment, and its role in mitigating climate change.

The launch ceremony for the national tree planting initiative was held under the theme: “Three million trees in three years … Plant a tree today, for a prosperous tomorrow”.
Today is also being observed as the 17th staging of national tree planting day.

Mr. Holness lamented that Jamaica only has about 19 percent of primary, or closed broadleaf forest cover.

The Prime Minister noted that over the years, work has been carried out to restore forest cover, but more needs to be done.

Mr. Holness expressed hope that the national tree planting initiative, along with other protective policies, will help prevent loss of forest cover.
