Trelawny and Portland flooded areas get some attention

by January 16th, 2018

Member of Parliament for South Trelawny Marisa Dalrymple Philibert says efforts will be made to eliminate a health risk, resulting from yesterday’s (Jan 16) flood rains in the constituency.

The MP visited the affected areas today, with representatives from the National Works Agency.

She says the water has receded from the Mahogany Hall main road and the NWA will be mobilizing work crews and equipment to clear silt and debris from the roadway.

Mrs. Dalrymple Philibert says a sink hole in Stewart Town, is blocked.

She adds that another concern is the loss suffered by farmers, whose crops and livestock were destroyed by the flood.

She says teams from the Labour Ministry have been assessing the needs of residents whose homes were flooded, in order to distribute items such as food and bedding.

She says black drums will be given to affected residents to store clean water.

Meantime, Member of Parliament for West Portland Daryl Vaz says teams from the National Works Agency accompanied him on a tour of flood ravaged communities today, to assess the damage to infrastructure.

Mr. Vaz says the situation at Matty Hole continues to be a major issue.

He says efforts will be made to create a temporary access road to the community by tomorrow.

He says other roadways in the constituency have been affected by breakaways and scoring.
