by March 26th, 2019

Tributes have been pouring in for veteran broadcaster Dorraine Samuels who passed away this afternoon (Mar 26).

Samuels died in hospital after undergoing surgery as she battled cancer. She was 59 years old.

The Press Association of Jamaica in its tribute says Jamaica has lost one of the most talented broadcasters in the business and her passing will leave a significant void in the profession.

PAJ President George Davis says Samuels was one of the few broadcasters who was able to seamlessly move between radio and television adding that  she was not only a broadcaster, but someone who also worked tirelessly to aid the less fortunate.

And the Jamaica Teachers Association says it has benefited greatly from the talent and wisdom of Samuels and she will be sadly missed.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness in paying tribute to Dorraine Samuels says she has shaped the lives of many who grew up listening to her on morning radio and her effortless presentation of the nightly news.

Mr. Holness states that Samuels inspired the nation as she shared remarkable human interest stories and presented the history of Jamaica in living colour, as she chronicled the evolution of modern Jamaica with poise and confidence.

Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips, in extending condolences to the family and friends of Samuels, said her passing has put the entire Jamaica in mourning, adding that Samuels reflected the best of the Jamaican personality, that is, warmth, fairness, balance and decency.

Meantime, House Speaker Pearnel Charles, at the opening of today’s sitting of the House of Representatives, paused to pay tribute to the veteran broadcaster.
