Tributes pour in for Gil Bailey

Tributes continue to pour in for veteran Broadcaster and Radio personality, Gil Bailey who died on Monday.

The Jamaican-born who for 50 years was the voice of Jamaica and Caribbean radio in New York, died at a New York City hospital on Monday morning. Reports are that before his death he experienced symptoms of the Coronavirus and was taken to the hospital last week.

IRIE FM’s Raido Broadcaster GT Taylor who’s friendship with Gil Bailey dates back to the 70s, said Bailey flew the Jamaican banner high in New York, New Jeresy, and Connecticut.

Gil Bailey migrated to New York City in the 1960’s and got married in 1972. Bailey and his wife began independently producing and host the Caribbean Affairs Radio Program on W.H.B.I. radio station in Manhattan in 1969.

Gil Bailey is credited with paving the way for many of those in Radio in New York.

Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports Olivia “Babsy” Grange has expressed sadness with the death of Bailey, and sent condolences to his family and friends.

Minister Grange said, Gil Bailey was a personal friend, and that they worked together for several years to promote Jamaica and our music in North America.

Meanwhile, fans flooded his Facebook page to post tributes Monday as news of his death began circulating in the Caribbean American community.

Last year Gil Bailey celebrated 50 years on tri-state (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) radio stations, including WHBI, where he started in 1970, WNWK, WPAT, and WNSR 620 AM, which he joined in 2018 after a one-year break, and his own Internet network, gilbaileyradio.com.

Bailey, was popular for the Gil and Pat Bailey show, a programme he hosted with his wife who died in December of 2016.

He was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican Government in 2003.

Gil Bailey was 84-years-old.
