Tufton says enquiry on Cornwall Hospital crisis not necessary

by April 19th, 2018

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says there is no need for an enquiry into the Cornwall Hospital crisis.

Air quality problems, including noxious fumes at the facility affected both staff and patients   and led to the eventual relocation of almost all of the services there.

The Opposition has been critical of government’s handling of the situation and Cornwall and on a tour of the facility this week, Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips called for an enquiry into conditions at the hospital.

Dr. Phillips said the enquiry should seek to find out what contributed to the government’s failure to evacuate the hospital as per the recommendation of ministry technocrats.

He also wants the enquiry to investigate and determine the true cause of the poor air quality affecting staff and patients at Cornwall.

However, the Health Minister, who toured the hospital today with Acting Prime Minister Dr. Horace Chang, said there was no need for an enquiry.

Dr. Tufton expressed his disappointment with the Opposition’s pronouncements.

He was speaking a press conference at the Cornwall Regional hospital this afternoon (Apl 19).
