Two police officers accused of corruption sentenced

Two police officers have been sentenced to time in prison for breaching the corruption prevention act.

Detective Corporal Valrie McIntosh and Constable Otwani deer were found guilty and sentenced to nine months and eighteen months imprisonment respectively when they appeared in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish  Court last Friday.

The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) their convictions and imprisonment stemmed from an incident which took place on Sunday January 13, 2013, when the two who were attached to the St.  Andrew north division, allegedly corruptly solicited $100,000.00 from the complainant in order to forebear a charge against him for breaching his bail condition.

It was alleged that the complainant explained to cops that he did not have that amount at hand but that he could give them fifty thousand dollars and pay the remaining by the following evening to which they agreed.

A report was made to then Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), and a file prepared and submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) which ruled that Detective Corporal McIntosh and Constable Deer be charged for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Both were brought before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court where the matter was tried and resulted in a guilty verdict.

A release from MOCA says both McIntosh and Deer have indicated that they will appeal the sentencing and have been offered bail in the sum of one million dollars, with sureties.
