Two students from a St. Catherine-based institution were arrested and charged yesterday (March 30), with being in possession of ganja infused edibles.

The police operation supported by the school’s Dean of Discipline also resulted in the seizure of several offensive weapons.

Head of the St. Catherine South Police Division, Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips said officers have been proactively engaging schools in the Division, as part of the violence interruption strategy to prevent violent encounters among students.

SSP Phillips said the children, who were found with ganja coconut drops, were released into the custody of their parents and are to appear in court soon.

Among the items seized during the operation are scissors, rulers and compasses – items normally used in class.

SSP Phillips explained that the students were told by school administrators not to take these items to school, and if needed in class, they would be provided.

Concerns were raised about how the items are used, after reports that they were being sharpened.

He said a meeting involving the police, representatives from the school and the Education Ministry will be held next week to discuss the matter.
