UNICEF renews call for gov’t to ban the use of corporal punishment in all settings

The United Nation’s Children’s Fund, UNICEF has renewed its call for the government to ban the use of corporal punishment in all settings, and to promote non-violent forms of discipline.

This follows the death of 4-year-old Nashaun Brown on Sunday (July 18), who was reportedly badly beaten by his stepfather.

The stepfather, has been charged with unlawful wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, cruelty to child and child abuse.

Speaking with Irie Fm News, UNICEF Jamaica’s Education Specialist Rebecca Tortello, says available data indicate that corporal punishment is prevalent in the country.
