UPDATE: Jamaica Defence Force instructed to restore water supply to thousands of citizens, amid strike by NWC workers

by May 11th, 2022

Information Minister Robert Morgan has confirmed that the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has been instructed by Government to mobilize its team of engineers to restore water supply to the country.

The order comes as many people have turned to various sources to access the commodity.

The country has been without water since yesterday (May 10) when over two thousand workers employed to the National Water Commission took industrial action.

Essential institutions such as hospitals and schools are among those impacted by the lock-offs.

Several schools returned to the virtual format today as they were unable to accommodate students.

The Labour Ministry, the National Water Commission and the Unions representing its workers are locked in a meeting to resolve the compensation and restructuring issues which led to the strike.

In a statement, the JDF states that it has been activated to support the NWC in restoring critical supplies to facilities such as hospitals and schools.

The JDF says water has been restored to Up Park camp in Kingston and surrounding communities.
