by May 11th, 2022

Jamaicans across the island are still calling for the restoration of their water supply, amid a strike by employees of the National Water Commission.

One St. Mary man told IRIE FM news that water has not been returned to his pipes and he is having difficulties getting supply from water trucks.

Meantime, a St. Andrew woman has expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, as she says she is a paying customer.

Meantime, the country’s health care professionals have expressed concern that the mass disruption in water supply could have severe implications for the delivery of health care.

President of the Nurses Association of Jamaica, Pasty Edwards-Henry told IRIE FM news that although the disruption has not yet reached a crisis level, the National Water Commission should work swiftly to restore supply.

She said the Association is monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, President of the Medical Association of Jamaica, Dr. Brian James said he hopes the Government and the Unions representing NWC employees will come to a solution to ensure that health facilities can carry out their functions effectively.

He lamented that while some larger health institutions might have reserves, smaller ones will not be able to function without the regular supply of the commodity.

and, Regional Director at the Southern Regional Health Authority Michael Bent says water reserves at health facilities in the region are being depleted, as hospitals and clinics continue to operate on their regular schedules.
