Usain Bolt contract talks dominate opening weekend in the A League

by October 22nd, 2018

There is still no word that sprint legend Usain Bolt has accepted the contract offered by Australian A League side Central Coast Mariners.

Bolt has been on trial with the club since August as he attempts to make an audacious switch to a second professional sport after one of the most decorated careers in track and field.

The 32-year-old scored twice in a practice game on October 12 but was not named in the match-day squad as the Mariners got their new season underway with a 1-1 draw on the road against the Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

News emerged over the weekend that Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp had tabled an offer Bolt’s management after the player turned down the two-year deal that was offered by Maltese side Valletta FC.

The offer was confirmed by Bolt’s agent Ricky Simms who said the Olympic gold medallist had received a contract offer from Mariners, but was not willing to provide further details.

Reports, however, suggests the deal is worth $150,000 for the season — nowhere near the $3 million that Bolt’s management is said to have initially discussed.

Mystery still surrounds the reported offer after coach Mike Mulvey — speaking on Sunday after the 1-1 draw  — not only denied any knowledge of a contract offer, but suggested Bolt may not fit into his team.

“You have a look at our front line today and you wonder whether he could get into any of those positions, wouldn’t you?” Mulvey said.

“I do appreciate how important this story is for the rest of the world.

“You’re just talking about speculation, I don’t know anything about what you’re talking about and that’s the honest truth.”

The Central Coast Mariners will next be in action on Saturday when they host Melbourne City FC.
