Usain Bolt labours to 100m win in Ostrava

by June 28th, 2017

The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, continued his build up to the grand farewell at the World Championship in London this summer with victory at the 56th Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava.

The triple world record holder, who was making his final appearance in the Czech city, overcame a sluggish start to win the 100m in 10.06 seconds.

It was the second race for the 9-time-Olympic Champion after he raced and won the 100m at the Racers Grand Prix two weeks ago.

“I’m not happy but I’m just getting into my running and have some training to do,” said Bolt, 30. “I’ll be fine. I need to get checked over by my doctor and the coach will give me some training, so no worries.

Cuba’s Yunier Pérez was second in a new personal best 10.09s while third went to Jak Ali Harvey – the former Jamaican sprinter now competing for Turkey – in 10.26s. Former Jamaica College standout Emre Zafer Barnes – who also switched allegiance to Turkey – was a 5th place finisher after running 10.41s.

Earlier men’s 400m world record holder Wayde van Neikerk of South Africa set a new world record over 300 meters, winning the event in 30.81 seconds while Mo Farah won the men’s 10,000m in a season best 27:12.09.

His dominant run, which bettered bettering Michael Johnson’s 30.85 set in 2000, also means he is the first man in history to run sub-10 seconds for 100m, sub-20 seconds for 200m, sub-31 seconds for 300m and sub-44 seconds for 400m.
