by April 5th, 2019

The University of the West Indies will be ramping up security on its Mona campus in Kingston, after an incident last evening (Apl4), where a female student was attacked by a would-be robber.

Students at the campus had expressed fear for their safety after the incident.

Reports from the campus police are that about 9: 30 p.m. the student was walking from the hospital compound towards Taylor Hall, when she was attacked by a man on foot.

He reportedly pushed her to the ground and grabbed her cell phone.

The student held on to the attacker and bit him, after which he dropped the cell phone, and fled.

The campus security says a security guard was alerted, however, the attacker fled on to the hospital campus.

Secretary for the UWI Guild of Students Christina Williams, says the Guild has taken steps to mitigate similar incidents in the future.

Miss Williams says counselling has been provided for the student.
