Vaccines en route from India to Jamaica

The shipment of covid vaccines gifted to Jamaica by the Indian government is on its way.

 

The update was given today by India’s ministry of external affairs.

 

The shipment contains vaccines for Jamaica, Guyana and Nicaragua.

 

According to reports on Indian media, the consignment of doses, which form part of the Vaccine Maitri Initiative, was airlifted this morning.

 

India has been receiving calls from several countries with requests for supplying covid vaccines.

 

The country is expected to produce 3.6 b doses annually, which is the highest of any country in the world and making it an important partner in the fight against covid.

 

The Indian government has approved oxford’s covishield and bharat biotech’s covaxin for emergency use authorisation.

 

The vaccines produced by India are cheap with the prices being capped at US $ 2.

 

India is also a part of the Gavi, which aims to accelerate the development and manufacture of covid-19 vaccines and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world.
