Vaz explains that he cannot intervene in OUR / JPS rate hike matter

by September 28th, 2021

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has indicated that he cannot intervene in the matter of the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) granting a rate increase to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).

This in the wake of public outrage about the increase granted to the light and power company, in the midst of the covid pandemic, when many persons are not earning an income.

Earlier this month, the OUR granted JPS a 1.4% increase which will be reflected on customers’ October bills.

Speaking in parliament today, Mr. Vaz pointed out that a review of the OUR’s decision is done by the courts.

He suggested that the issue be further discussed by members of the house at the joint select committee, which is reviewing the electricity act.
