Venus Williams lead semifinal charge at Wimbledon

Veteran American tennis player Venus Williams is through to the semi-finals of the women’s singles event at Wimbledon after knocking out French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets.

Williams, who was winning her 100th singles match earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory against the 20-year-old Latvian in a match that lasted one hour and 13 minutes

The 37 year old who is the oldest player to reach the last four since Martina Navratilova in 1994 and is just one victory away from her 9th final eight years after her last appearance.

Also making progress was Garbine Muguruza, unseeded Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova and 6th seed Johanna Konta.

Muguruza advanced after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over 7th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova while Rybarikova recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win Coco Vandeweghe.

Konta became the first British woman to reach the last four in almost 40 years after riding a wave of home support to battle to a 6-7(2) 7-6(5) 6-4 win over 2nd seed Simona Halep.

Halep’s loss means Czech Karolina Pliskova will overhaul Germany’s Angelique Kerber at the top of the WTA rankings, without striking a ball, when the rankings are updated on Monday.

On the men’s side Novak Djokovic eased into the quarter-finals with a routine 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 win over Adrian Mannarino and next faces Tomas Berdych.
