Victoria Town residents protest mob killing of senior citizen

by May 7th, 2022

Residents of Victoria Town in southern Manchester have blocked a section of the main road in the area, in protest over yesterday’s mob killing of a man in Mandeville.

The deceased has been identified as Chieften Campbell.

Councillor for the Porus division, Claudia Morant-Baker, said residents are upset about the killing, which they believe was caused by a case of mistaken identity. It’s reported that Campbell was attacked after some residents accused him of stealing.

The councillor said Campbell was an outstanding member of the Victoria Town community and a member of a school board.

Mrs. Morant-Baker said Campbell died, despite the best efforts of the medical staff at the Mandeville Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, residents have called for the intervention of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), as they claim that the police contributed to Campbell’s demise.

Head of the Manchester police, Superintendent Lloyd Darby said a probe has been launched into Campbell’s death. He says reports are that sometime before 2:00 PM on Friday, officers were on foot patrol on Manchester road when they saw a crowd converged around the man.

Superintendent Darby explained that the crowd had accused the man of stealing.

Superintendent Darby is appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation.
