West Coast Fever sweat on fitness of Jamaican star Jhaniele Fowler

by May 2nd, 2019

Jamaican star goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler is facing a fitness test ahead of this weekend’s fixtures in the Suncorp Super Netball League in Australia after she injured her ankle while playing for the West Coast Fever against the Adelaide Thunderbirds in round one.

Fowler, who landed awkwardly on her ankle, was forced to miss the final seven minutes of the contest.

Before leaving she had scored a game high 51 goals from 51 shots, but the Fever surrendered a two-goal lead on the way to narrow 61-60 loss to a Thunderbirds team that featured Jamaican defender Shamera Sterling.

The team is also awaiting news on the fitness of captain Courtney Bruce who landed heavily on her arm in the dying stages of the opening quarter.

Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich on Wednesday refused to rule either player out of the Grand Final rematch against defending champions Sunshine Coast Lightning on Sunday.

“Both Courtney and Jhaniele will continue to be monitored over the next 48 hours before the final team lists have to be submitted on Friday,” Marinkovich said.

“We’re continuing to work closely with our medical team to assess their injuries, and will give both Courtney and Jhaniele up until the last minute to prove their fitness.”

“The health of our athletes is paramount, and no player will take the court if they’re not given medical clearance.”
