Wheatley summons local board members of Petrojam to meeting

by June 15th, 2018

Energy Minister, Dr. Andrew Wheatley summoned the three Jamaican directors on the Petrojam board to a meeting, today (June 15).

The directors present were Chairman Dr. Perceval Bahado Singh, Richard Creary and Harold Malcolm.

In a statement, Dr. Wheatley says his decision to meet with the local directors was prompted by the preliminary findings of an investigation, into several grave and troubling matters at Petrojam, which have dominated public discourse in recent weeks.

He says he will use the powers afforded to his office, and take decisive action to deal with all those matters currently affecting the state owned entity.

Petrojam officials came under fire, from PAAC members on Wednesday, over several issues including travel expenses for Petrojam Chairman, who lives in the United States, the salary for the Human Resource Manager, and a contracted entertainment firm.

The officials were asked to return to the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee of parliament in three weeks, with detailed explanations about operations, and questionable spending by the entity.

Meantime, Opposition Member Julian Robinson says Energy Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley, and the board of Petrojam, have no moral authority to solve the problems at the state owned oil refinery.

Mr. Robinson’s critique comes in the wake of reports that Dr. Wheatley summoned Petrojam’s local board members to a meeting, following preliminary findings from investigations into grave and troubling matters at the entity.

Mr. Robinson says he finds it laughable that the minister and broad members are now admitting that there are issues affecting Petrojam.

Mr. Robinson says several other problems at Petrojam have not come to light as yet.
