Wilson wins Jamaica’s 1st medal, Davis advances

Tyreke Wilson of Calabar landed the first medal for Jamaica at the IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

Wilson snatched bronze in the boys’ 100m when he clocked 10.65 seconds to finish behind South Africans Tshenolo Lemao and Retshidisitswe Mlenga.

Lemao captured the gold medal in 10.57 seconds while Mlenga posted 10.61 seconds to claim silver.

World leader Kevona Davis of Edwin Allen was impressive on her way to victory in the first round of the girls’ 100m, winning heat 4 in 11.88s.

Earlier Tyrese Reid and Kimar Farquharson failed to make progress in the boys’ 800m after Reid clocked 1:56.99 seconds for 5th place in his heat and Farquharson ran 1:57.66 for 6th in his heat.

Earlier Anthony Cox with a personal best 46.53 seconds and Antonio Watson, 47.22s, won their respective heats in the boys’ 400m to advance with the top two times.

In the girls’ 400m Shaquena Foote progressed to the semifinals after finishing second in her heat in 56.18s.

Kimone Reid with a best of 40.84m in the girls’ discus finished 15th overall in the qualifying round and failed to advance.
