Windalco effluent holding pond to be expanded, to lessen spills and fish kill in Rio Cobre

by August 4th, 2021

The effluent holding pond at Windalco in St. Catherine is to be expanded as part of efforts to minimize spill and subsequent fish kills in the Rio Cobre.

Another fish kill in recent days has left many residents upset about the frequency of the spills and the lack of redress for the adverse impacts on health and livelihood.

The National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, had taken Windalco to court, for a 2019 spill.

Since that spill event, Windalco had been attempting to implement contingency measures to prevent another effluent leak.

Senior Manager of Environmental Management at NEPA, Richard Nelson explained that Windalco had some challenges with land acquisition, and those were just recently resolved.

Mr. Nelson said the court case regarding the 2019 spill, is at the case management stage.

With regards to this current spill, NEPA continues to monitor the situation.
