Windies and England trade blows on absorbing day 2 of 3rd Test

The West Indies have a slim lead of 22 runs with 7 wickets in hand as Shai Hope and Roston Chase guided the Caribbean team to the 93 for 3 at the close of play on an absorbing second day of the third and deciding Test against England at Lord’s.

Hope ended the day on 35 after facing 71 balls, while Chase navigated 18 balls on his way to 3 not out as they shared in an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 24 runs.

Back in the pavilion are Kieran Powell (45), Kyle Hope (1) and Kraigg Brathwaite (4) who became James Anderson’s 500th test victim.

Anderson, who has so far claimed 2 for 17, came into the third Test needing three wickets to join an even more exclusive club. Among pacers, only Glenn McGrath and Courtney Walsh have previously managed to combine threat and longevity to the same level; out ahead, beyond the 600 mark, are the spin trio of Anil Kumble, Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.

Earlier Kemar Roach and captain Jason Holder took a combined 9 wickets to restrict the home team to 194 all out for a 71 run first innings lead after they started the day on 46 for 4.

Roach dominated the bowling with 5 for 72, Holder picked up 4 for 54 while Shannon Gabriel, who continues to have no-ball problems, chipped in with 1 for 64.

Ben Stokes was the best batsman for England on the rain affected day getting a cultured of 60 from 75 balls while putting on an important 56 with Johnny Bairstow (21) for the 5th wicket.

He also added 39 for the 4th wicket with Dawid Malan, who made 20, while Anderson who scored 8 and Broad who lasted for 38, hung around to share in a critical 31 run last wicket partnership.

Scores entering day 3, West Indies 123 and 93-3, England 194.
