Windies fightback vs England after poor showing with the bat

by September 7th, 2017

The West Indies after a dismal showing with the bat rebounded with the ball to give themselves hope heading into play on the second day of the third and deciding Test against England at Lord’s.

With only Kieran Powell and Shai Hope able to reach 20, the Windies were dismissed for 123 – after winning the toss and electing to bat – inside 58 overs.

Ben Stokes bowled a devastating spell either side of tea to claim a career best 6 for 22, as the Caribbean side capitulated from the relative security of 78 for 2 in mid-afternoon.

England found the conditions just as treacherous though and when play ended they had slumped to 46-4 in reply with skipper Jason Holder and Kemar Roach taking two wickets apiece to leave the home team trailing by 77 runs.

West Indies had earlier won the toss and elected to bat under grey skies and it was James Anderson who took two early wickets to take his career test haul to 499 — one shy of becoming only the sixth bowler to reach the 500 milestone in test cricket.

Hope, a double centurion in the second test won by West Indies at Headingley, shared a 56-run partnership with Powell, but once Hope went for 29 and Stokes took a brilliant caught-and-bowled to remove Powell the visitors crumbled, losing their last eight wickets for 45 runs.

Dawid Malan (13) and Stokes (13) are the not out batsmen and will return to the crease for England on day 2.

Scores, West Indies 123, England 46-4.

The three-match series is tied at one-all.
