The West Indies slumped to 5 wickets loss in the first T20I against India in Kolkata after a subpar effort with the bat saw them being restricted to just 109 for 8 from their 20 overs.

The Windies, after losing the toss and being inserted to take first strike, lost their first wicket with just 16 runs on the board after 2.1 overs when Dinesh Ramdin was removed while on 2.

The team then lost wickets at regular intervals, 22-2 after 3.1 overs with Shai Hope going for 14, 38-3 after 4.4 when Shimron Hetmeyer departed for 10, 47-4 after 9.2 overs with Keiron Pollard dismissed for 14, and 49-5 after 10.1 when Darren Bravo got out while on 5.

More wickets tumbled with Rovman Powell and skipper Carlos Brathwaite both making 4 before Jamaican all-rounder Fabian Allen slammed 27 off 20 balls.

Keemo Paul (15) and Khary Pierre (9) were left unbeaten while Kuldeep Yadav led the Indian attack with 3-13 from his 4 overs.

Set a target of 110 to win, the Indians wobbled to 45-4 when Lokesh Rahul was removed by Brathwaite while on 16 after 7.3 overs.

They however went on to make 110 for 5 in 17.5 overs led by Dinesh Karthik’s unbeaten 31 off 34 balls and Krunal Pandya’s quick-fire 21 not out from just 9 deliveries.

Oshane Thomas (2-21) and Brathwaite (2-11) were the top Windies bowlers.

The second and penultimate match in the series will be played on Tuesday.
