by June 28th, 2018

The draw for the round of 16 at the World Cup in Russia has been completed after action in the first round came to a close with the playing of the final set of games in groups G and H on Thursday.

Play in Group G saw dark horses Belgium beating England 1-0 in a match that saw both teams making a combined 17 changes to their respective starting XI’s.

The lone goal of the contest was scored by former Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj in the 51st minute.

The Belgians with the result wrapped up top spot on 9 points and now go on to face japan in the last 16.

England who finished second on 6 points will face Colombia.

The dead rubber contest in Group G saw Tunisia coming from behind to post a 2-1 win against Panama, their first win at the FIFA World Cup in 40 years.

Tunisia’s opening goal scored by Fakreddine Ben Youssef in the 51st minute of play was the 2500th goal scored in World Cup finals history.

Panama earlier took the lead against the run of play from an own goal in the 33rd minute. Jose Luis Rodriguez’s strike from distance took a deflection off of Tunisia defender Yassine Meriah, which sent goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi the wrong way.

Tunisia’s second was scored in the 66th by Wahbi Khazri who slotted past Jaime Penedo from close range.

Over in Group H, Japan became the first team in World Cup history to advance by virtue of the fair play rule while Senegal simultaneously became the first to be eliminated also by that rule.

The Samurai Blue made progress despite losing 1-0 to the already eliminated Poland while Senegal – who entered the round at the top of the table – suffered a 1-0 loss to Colombia who topped the group on 6 points.

Central defender Yerry Mina, for the second straight game, proved to be the hero for the Colombians as his towering header in the 74th minute was enough to send the South Americans into the second round.

It means no African team has progressed from the initial group stage of the competition for the first time since 1982.

With the group stage now complete, the World Cup takes a break until Saturday when the knockout phase gets underway with Argentina opposing France and Uruguay taking on Portugal.
